Rapper Lil Nas X issued a formal apology on Instagram Monday as backlash from the Christian community still resonated over his latest single, J Christ.
Christian rappers had criticized the song before its release, looking at it as a mockery of Jesus Christ and religion. Lil Nas X posted an Instagram video explaining while also apologizing for the backlash received after Friday's release of the song.
This image, with its corresponding promo materials for the video, had religious imagery with Lil Nas X being portrayed as Jesus Christ on the cross, and this immediately drew flak from Christians who were obviously offended by it.
Lil Nas X underlined the mistake in a video that he posted on Instagram, saying, I know I mess up really bad this time. He mentioned it was not his intention to hurt, and the message of the song is a metaphor for his resurrected career, pointing out the whole scene fighting Satan in the music video.
Reacting to a TikTok video where he drank juice and crackers used during Christian communion by Christians, Lil Nas X said that it was sway and apologized for any misunderstanding. He went on to clarify that his apology video was aimed at clearing his own head, not necessarily to gain favours.
For example, Bryson Grey, a Christian rapper, labelled Lil Nas X a reprobate and proceeded to claim that he had no reverence for Christianity in his attempt to have the public talk about him. Notably, Lil Nas X has shown a satanic lean by releasing Satan-themed sneakers this year.
Before, Lil Nas X had placed controversial scenes in his music video for MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name), which was why it had resulted in controversy being drawn given its portrayal of religious themes. Now that he did account for this historical fact, he did mention he was not interested in a mockery at this point.
