George Fernandes, the legendary politician, is no more. He was born on 3 June 1930. Beginning his public life as a fierce trade unionist, Fernandes had been a journalist, and agriculturist during his illustrious career. A member of Rajya Sabha from Bihar, a tall leader of the Janata Dal, Fernandez founded the Samata Party later.
Communications, industry, railways, and defence were his portfolios under different governments. His contributions as Vajpayee's minister (Raksha Mantri) are hailed.
"George Sahab represented the best of India’s political leadership. Frank and fearless, forthright and farsighted, he made a valuable contribution to our country. He was among the most effective voices for the rights of the poor and marginalised. Saddened by his passing away," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, mourning Fernandes' death.
Arrested during the Emergency by the Indira Gandhi government, he was staunch and fearless.
Former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitly today said, "Last rites will be held tomorrow, after the arrival of his son. Right now, the body is being embalmed."
