Legend beyond any measures - SPB

SP Balasubramaniam is not just a name but a huge brand in singing talent in Indian Cinema. He made his debut way back in 1967 and even today, he has few good songs as a senior most singer. He ventured into acting, dubbing, film production, music composition along with singing.

He gained respect and fan following in every language he sung. He sang almost 40,000 songs in his 50 years long career and he still says he is ready to learn from younger generation. He started Padutha Teeyaga program in mid-90s and is still continuing it to give young singers, a platform to showcase their talent.

As an actor, he appeared mostly in Tamil movies but in Telugu he did Pakkinti Ammayi, Prema, Chirujallu, Pavitra Bhandam, Goppinti Alludu, Indra, Mithunam and few more films. His role and performance in Mithunam gained praises from many critics and audiences alike.

He became the voice of Kamal Haasan as he is identified as one of the best singers who can voice act. His dubbing for the actor has introduced him to Telugu people much more and even though Kamal did dub in his own voice in Telugu, he also encouraged SPB to be his voice for dubbed films of his from other languages.

He became voice of Salman Khan in Hindi and sang in the era of Udit Narayan, Kumar Shanu, Hariharan giving them tough competition. He sang alongside stalwarts and legends like Ghantasala, P. Susheela, S. Janaki, Soundarrajan, P. B. Srinivas, J. Yesudas and he sang in the composition of S. Rajeswara Rao, K.V. Mahadevan, M.S. Viswanath, Chellapalli Satyam, Kodandapani, Adinarayana Rao, Chakravarthy, Ilaiyaraja, Gangai Amaren, Rajan-Nagendra, RD Pancham Burman, O.P. Nayyar, Laxmikanth-Pyarelal, Raj-Koti, AR Rahman, Deva, MM Keeravani, Hamsalekha and many more composers over the years.

He composed music for films like Padamati Sandhyaragam, Mayuri, Jaitrayatra and several others in Telugu. He sang almost every song in every film with male vocals in Telugu Cinema for two decades. Indian Government awarded him Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan for his work in music industry. He started out his career as a singer as a back-up option to his Engineering career way back in 1965, as SP Kondandapani believed in his talent and encouraged him. He is now, a legend that music industry in India can never reproduce and the way he worked non-stop and still has penchant, passion to sing, we can only say that he is born to sing.
