The other day, speaking to a newspaper, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar said that the fame that imitation brings is not durable. She was talking about Ranu Mondal, a non-professional singer who is now an Internet star. Till recently, Ranu was singing on railway platforms in West Bengal. Today, she is all set to debut in Bollywood, thanks to the likes of Shankar Mahadevan, who came to know about her through a social media post.
When asked about Ranu's talent, Lata Mangeshkar commented that she won't last long if she imitates some other singer. The revered singer's remark has not gone down well with many. "No other living Indian has received so much love and respect from billions as Lata ji has. This is so disappointing," said Anand Ranganathan. A troll described Lata as a petty person who is jealous of talented singers.
But did Lata say anything wrong? She described a number of aspiring singers as "beautiful talents" in the interview. However, she struck a note of caution, adding that they should be original like a Shreya Ghosal. Absurd that Lata has been trolled for giving a piece of sane advice.
