Kushi was a cult classic, says proud producer AM Ratnam

It was on 27 April 2001 that 'Kushi' hit the screens. Starring Pawan Kalyan in the role of a college-going, happy-go-lucky, egoistic youngster, it starred Bhumika Chawla as the heroine. As the film turns 20 today, producer AM Ratnam said that he is extremely proud to have bankrolled the film on Sri Surya Movies, then one of the biggest south Indian film banners.

"Few movies are evergreen, few are trendsetting, few are cult classics. KUSHI is everything! Proud to have produced it on our banner!," the producer wrote.

The blockbuster had music by Mani Sharma, while its songs nad fights were conceived by Pawan himself. Directed by SJ Suryah, it was the remake of a Tamil movie starring Thalapathy Vijay by the same name.

After he watched 'Badri', AM Ratnam wanted to produce a stylish, youthful commercial film with Pawan in the lead. The film made the actor the biggest superstar among the actors of his generation.

A Wikipedia post on the movie says that it had a 50-day run in 101 centres, a 100-day run in 79 centres and a 175-day run in eight centres.
