What makes Korangani a much favoured destination for trekkers?

The news of 9 people losing their lives due to the Theni forest fire have engulfed us all in a state of deep sorrow. What was supposed to be a scenic and exhilarating nature trek went berserk when the fire broke out.  Here are the top reasons as to why people incline to choose Korangani to be their trekking destination.

Korangani is situated in the western ghats of the Bodinayakanur region, Theni. The scenic locale is also home to vibrant vegetation in addition to boasting itself as the owner of the world’s highest tea cultivation at 8000 ft.

With Korangani hills in the east and Kolukkumalai in the west, the location is widely known for its frequently changing weather, chilly environment and a constant strong breeze of the winds. Apart from this Korangani also has six streams which narrow down to meet in Kottakudi river following which they merge in Vaigai dam.

This variety in flaura and fauna makes an important reason for the presence of various animals like Indian gaurs, barking deers, langurs, wild cats, and probably leopards and tigers as well. Korangani is not only a viable spot for trekking and nature strolls, but just 12 kms away from it you reach Top Station which is also pretty famous. It is very much possible to trek through this region’s dense vegetation to even reach Kerala’s Munnar.

Korangani also has a Kollywood connection with superhit movies like ‘Myna’, ‘Alagar Samiyin Kuthirai’ and ‘Kumki’ having been shot at these regions. Period ranging from August to December are the most suitable to trek in Korangani. It is a deeply grieving fact that such a place is where 9 lives were lost. May those souls rest in peace.
