As India approaches its 78th Independence Day, a harrowing incident in Kolkata has sparked nationwide outrage and raised serious concerns about safety and justice in the country. On the early morning of August 9th, a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor was tragically found dead in a seminar hall at the RG Kar Medical College's emergency building.
The victim's body was discovered in a semi-nude state, bearing signs of severe trauma, including bruises and blood on her eyes, face, body, and genitals. Reports suggest that she had been working in the seminar hall until 2 AM the previous night, only to be found in a horrific condition the next morning. The news has sent shockwaves nationwide, prompting widespread calls for justice.
Initially reported as a suicide, the case has since been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further investigation. Within 24 hours of the crime, police arrested a 35-year-old civic volunteer based on evidence captured by CCTV cameras. However, the latest autopsy reports suggest the involvement of multiple perpetrators, as more than 150 mg of liquid semen was found on the victim's body.
The medical community, deeply shaken by the incident, has responded with widespread protests, with doctors across Kolkata and India striking work in solidarity. Tens of thousands of women in Kolkata and across West Bengal are expected to take to the streets to demand justice and express their outrage over the heinous crime. The case has ignited a nationwide debate on safety and the nation's state.
