In a befitting honour, Indian men’s and women’s cricket team’s captains Viral Kohli and Mithali Raj have topped the list of ICC’s IDI rankings for batsmen and batswomen respectively.
27-year old Kohli, currently the best batsman in the world across all formats (ODI, Tests and T20s) and predicted by many to become a cricketing legend by the time he hangs up his boots at least after a decade from now, has topped the recently-released ICC ranking of ODI batsmen, creating a record by beating Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of points when he topped the rankings in 1998.
During the course of his 32nd ODI century in the series-decider at Kanpur which paved way for India’s 2-1 victory over the Kiwis, Kohli also created a new record by surpassing 9,000 ODI runs in his 202nd match, beating South African de Villers’ record of reaching the figure in his 205th match. Showing a rich vein of form, Kohli scored 121, 29 and 113 in the ODI series, winning the ‘Man of the Series’ award.
Jasprit Bumrah has been placed in the 3rd spot among bowlers while Axar Patel is in the 8th spot. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, who was a touch expensive in the Kanpur match, is placed at the 15th spot. Indian women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj is placed on top of the list of batswomen followed by Australia’s Ellis Berry and New Zealand’s Amy Satterthwaite. Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami is placed second in the bowlers’ list.
