Heist movies have become one of the commonly explored genres in Malayalam cinema today. 'Kohinoor' is one such movie. They all make a style statement and the most law abiding citizen will vouch for them. 'Kohinoor' has been able to make it till the far end and not flatter halfway, when the capers of the lead hero becomes boring.
Louis played by Asif Ali and Andikunju played by Aju Varghese are small town thieves, who are looking for their big break. The setting is the 80s and this vintage feel is maintained throughout the narrative. They are not the only ones in the heist. There is Haider played by Indrajith, who plans a textile shop robbery, which is actually not just textiles, but diamond exporting too being done in the sidelines.
With Haider are Nicholas (Chemban Vinod) and Freddy (Vinay Forrt). In the narrative, along with Louis and Andikunju, Haider stands his own and Indrajith impresses with his perfect dialogue delivery and comic timing. While the narration traverses through their plot to get in some money and some counter plots, a small love angle is pictured with Asif and Aparna. She manages to look like an 80s girl.
From Mumbai to locations in Kerala, the story unfolds briskly. The second half picks up pace and there is twist after twist. It has a liner narration and what would stead the movie in good stead is the comic touch throughout. Director Vinay Govind has delivered a comic hit with this one. Asif Ali can take heart that he has been part of a good project. This is his production venture too and looks like it has paid off well.
