Pondicherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, who is the country’s first-ever woman IPS officer, jumped off a three-and-a-half feet compound wall to inspect a Hospital for its anti-dengue actions in Karaikkal yesterday.

Referred to as a people’s Governor by the media, Bedi has been camping in Karaikkal for the past few days, visiting several places each day and conducting surprise checks on Govt. establishments. On the fourth day of her camp, she went to the Collectorate and attempted to inspect the functioning of Govt. Hospitals and to discuss ways of improving the mode of serving the people.

She was accompanied by District Collector Kesavan, S.P. Chandran and other officials as she wanted to go near the ‘Lady of Lourdes’ statue inside the campus. A wall had been erected around the statue and the gate was locked. Bedi asked for the keys and realized within a few moments that the key had been misplaced.

Wasting no further time, the 68-year old former cop got up and scaled the three-and-a-feet high wall, forcing others to follow suit as they were throwing a ‘protective ring’ around her. It may be recalled that Bedi introduced many prison reforms when she was in-charge of the Tihar Jail in New Delhi. She even went around Puducherry by bicycle a few days back to check whether night security has been foolproof or not.
