BJP leader and NCW member Kushbu Sundar recently used the term "Cheri language" to respond to a DMK supporter who made derogatory comments about her and actress Trisha. 'Cheri' is a Tamil word for Dalit ghettos and is considered offensive by many.
The Tamil Nadu Congress and Dalit bodies have condemned Kushbu for using the term 'Cheri language' and have demanded an apology from her. They said that the term disregards the history, culture and lives of the Dalit community. Kushbu has questioned the outrage and claimed that she used the term 'Cheri' in a "sarcastic" way to show love. She also shared a screenshot of a dictionary meaning and implied that 'Cheri' is a French word that means "beloved" or "loved". She accused the critics of being selective and ignorant.
Meanwhile the VCK party has filed a complaint against Khushbu in the police commissioner's office. It has been alleged that she denigrated the language spoken by Dalit people as a violent language and an untouchable language.
How funny to see an outrage from a bunch of selective crowd over my language in my tweet. The same are mute spectators to an outrage of women modesty. Would like to educate the educated illiterates a little about it. My tweet is laced with sarcasm. 'Cheri' is a word in French… pic.twitter.com/xVifEuTuz8
