Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly planning to step down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party ahead of this year’s general election, which he is widely expected to lose. Canadian media, including the Globe and Mail and Reuters, have cited sources suggesting Trudeau will announce his resignation before a key caucus meeting on Wednesday. However, a final decision has not been confirmed.
Trudeau has led the Liberal Party for 11 years and served as prime minister for nine. His leadership has recently been overshadowed by multiple crises, including poor opinion polls, the resignation of key allies, and threats of U.S. tariffs under Donald Trump. Trudeau’s potential departure is seen by some as a preemptive move to avoid being ousted.
If he resigns, the Liberal Party would face the upcoming election without a permanent leader, with polls indicating a significant lead for the Conservative Party under Pierre Poilievre. The election must occur by October 20 but could be called earlier.
The situation intensified after the sudden resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. In a critical letter, Freeland denounced Trudeau’s “political gimmicks,” referring to policies such as tax breaks and rebates widely seen as pre-election measures. She argued these policies are ill-timed given the economic challenges Canada faces, including the looming threat of U.S. tariffs.
Trudeau became prime minister in 2015, gaining support for his progressive agenda, but rising economic concerns and dissatisfaction have eroded his popularity. His government has also faced backlash for failing to address the high cost of living. Recent polls show the Conservatives holding a wide lead, with Poilievre gaining support even among figures like Elon Musk.
