With the education sector being one of the areas most affected by COVID-19, the students in the state of Kerala has started their new academic year. The Kerala government has initiated a virtual system of education as an effort to ensure that the students do not miss out on lessons due to COVID-19 induced lockdown. With over 42 lakh students in attendance, the virtual classes in about 12,000 schools have begun from Monday.
Under the project, 'First Bell', classes will be streamed on a free, public-run television channel available on cable networks, direct-to-home services and over the internet. Those who do not have access to Victers channel at their home can access it via the internet using smartphones or computers.
Classes will be held from 8.30 am to 5.30 am from Monday to Friday for all classes except 11 in the channel. The sessions will be re- telecasted on Saturdays and Sundays. KITE has brought out the timetable for conducting the classes. The teachers will also have to watch these classes along with the students. Doubts can be cleared from their respective school teachers directly through telephone or social media.
For the students who do not have TV, smartphone, or internet connection, the government has instructed principals of schools to arrange necessary arrangements.
