Amid the lockdown, a Keralite pregnant woman and her husband travelled 53 hours to cover the distance of more than 3,000km to reach their hometown. Travelling across nine states, the couple safely reached home on Wednesday.
Vrinda and her husband Vishnu decided to take up the journey after the doctor instructed her to return home and take complete bed rest. As per the hospital's advice, the couple rented an ambulance with an ICU facility for Rs 1,20,000. The couple had to sell their gold and also sought financial assistance from their families, friends and few politicians to arrange the huge sum.
Soon, the couple started their journey from the hospital at Greater Noida to their house in Haripad on March 29 at 11 a.m. The couple was accompanied by first aid technician Santhosh. As it was the first-ever trip to south India for the Noida origin ambulance drivers - Raj and Satyaveer, they had no clue about the route. They followed Google Maps to help find the way. As they had stocked food and water for the long trip, the ambulance was stopped only twice on the way to refill fuel.
Though they were stopped by the police at Walayar check post, they managed to convince the officers by showing Vrinda's medical emergency reports. Traveling across Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, the couple reached Haripad taluk hospital in Alappuzha by 2.30 pm on Wednesday. Vrinda was given drips and later she was discharged by 6 in the evening. The couple has been asked to remain in quarantine for three weeks.
