Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's press meet on the coronavirus outbreak held at 6 pm every evening became a regular viewing in Kerala households. The chief minister had begun holding daily press conferences, along with health minister K.K. Shailaja, since March 16 as the number of COVID-19 cases in the state began to rise. However, the daily press conference by the CM was recently stopped. Following this, the opposition had strengthened its allegations on the discrepancy in the government’s data contract with US company Sprinklr.
Now the latest is that the CM will resume addressing the media from Monday onwards on alternative days as the number of COVID-19 cases in the state has dropped. The announcement has come at a time when the CM's decision to stop the regular press conference was misinterpreted widely.
In the lockdown period, Keralites glue to the TV channels at sharp 6 p.m to watch the CM's press briefings that were a great source of information for people in the state as well as Malayalis living abroad. From discussing in detail about the number of cases and the new measures being taken to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, Pinarayi Vijay spends nearly an hour interacting with the journalists briefing about the severity of the deadly disease. But for the past few days, the public has been missing CM on screen.
Meanwhile, Kerala has flattened the curve with a decline in the number of new cases as well as people quarantined in the last two weeks.
