Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has on Monday announced a freebie for all women regardless of their economic status. They can travel for free in buses and metro trains. This is just a proposal as of now. The Centre needs to give approval for free commutation through metro trains since the Delhi Metro is partly run by the Central government.
"On all DTC buses, cluster buses and metro trains, women will be allowed to travel free of cost so that they have a safe travel experience and can access modes of transport which they were not able to, due to high prices," Kejriwal today said.
He added that those women who can afford to buy the tickets can continue to do so. They needn't avail the subsidy.
The move will cost the Delhi government a whopping Rs 700 Cr per annum.
