Keerthy Suresh-starrer 'Penguin' has become the first Telugu film to find its spot on a streaming site without having a theatrical release. The thriller, starring the 'Mahanati' actress as the central character, will stream on Amazon Prime Video on June 19.
The global OTT release was on Friday announced amid the lockdown. 'Penguin', produced by Tamil director Karthik Subbaraj, will also stream in Tamil and Malayalam versions.
Six other films in the queue
"Amazon Prime Video has also acquired six other highly-anticipated Indian films, spanning five Indian languages. The Direct-to-Service line-up features additional releases such as 'Shakuntala Devi' (the Hindi film starring Vidya Balan in the lead), legal drama 'Ponmagal Vandhal' (the Tamil film starring Jyotika in the lead), 'Sufiyum Sujatayum' (Malayalam), 'Law' (Kannada) and 'French Biryani' (Kannada). The movies will premiere exclusively on Prime Video over the next three months and will be available in 200 countries and territories worldwide," a statement from the streaming giant says.
“Over the last 2 years, Prime Video has become the destination of choice for our customers to watch new releases, across the languages, within weeks of their theatrical release. Now we are taking this one step further, with seven of India’s most-anticipated films premiering exclusively on Prime Video, bringing the cinematic experience to their doorstep," the statement adds.
