Recently, KCR reportedly said that former Prime Minister Vajpayee hailed Indira Gandhi as Goddess Durga after the Indo-Pak war of 1971. He made the remarks while writing off the BJP, saying that the saffron party will lose the 2024 elections.
Netizens are reminding the Telangana Chief Minister that Vajpayee never called Indira Gandhi a goddess. The BJP stalwart, who passed away a few years ago, himself once clarified the same.
"I never referred to Indira Gandhi as Durga. This is something that the press decided to print. I kept saying that I have never called her Durga. They kept insisting that I have," Vajpayee was once quoted as saying by The Quint.
The 1971 war resulted in the liberation of East Pakistan, birthing Bangladesh. The international stature of Indira Gandhi went up several notches after India's victory against Pakistan. At that time, the Congress leader's popularity in India was huge. Vajpayee was a prominent Opposition leader. The Opposition did back the government of India, but Vajpayee never really went out of his way to deify the then PM.
