On Saturday last, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and several representatives of the Telugu film industry called on KCR requesting him to grant relief measures for Tollywood in the wake of the pandemic. On Monday, the GHMC poll manifesto of the TRS has promised certain measures that have the potential of attracting the votes of those dependent on the industry for their livelihood.
The government will waive off minimum fixed power charges for cinema halls for a period of six months. This has been a consistent demand of exhibitors, the most affected segment, since April.
In a further boost, theatres will be given the freedom to fix ticket rates as they deem fit. While this sounds too broad, there could be a twist in the form of some new sub-rules in due course of time. After all, the interests of the audience too will have to be considered by the government.
Theatres will also have the freedom to screen as many shows per day as they can.
In a relief to producers, GST reimbursement for films made under a budget of Rs 10 Cr has been promised. Most small- and medium-range movies fall under this category.
Telugu film celebs are most likely to welcome the relief measures.
