Today is the Birthday of veteran lyricist, poet, writer and orator Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu. He turns 63 today.
Vairamuthu entered the film industry in the early 1980s when Kaviyarasu Kannadasan and Vaaliba Kavignar Vaali were ruling the roost. Amid these two stalwarts, Vairamuthu created a huge impact with his lyrics and became a star of his own might.
The first song he wrote for a film is the super hit 'Ithu Oru Pon Maalai Pozhudhu' for the 1980 film 'Nizhalgal' under the musical score of Ilaiyaraja. Since then there has been no looking back. His combination with Ilaiyaraja continued for a decade resulting in so many timeless classic songs before they split due to creative differences and never teamed up again.
Though Vairamuthu has worked with all music directors, his association with Ilaiyaraja and A.R.Rahman has been highly successful. He has penned thousands of super hit songs and till remains to be a much sought-after lyric writer even after the emergence of many young lyricists including his son Madhan Karky.
Vairamuthu also holds the distinction of having won six National awards for his lyrics, the most number of times by an Indian lyricist. He was also honoured with the Civilian honours Padmasree and Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government. He has won so many awards and recognitions from the Tamil Nadu State Government
Vairamuthu has penned over 5,800 songs in Tamil films under various genres. He is equally adept in penning rural songs filled with lucid lyrics, songs using urban slang and songs with chaste Tamil words. He is also a lyricist who often uses scientific terms and references to scientific concepts in Tamil cinema.
He is also a prolific writer and a good orator. His first novel 'Kallikattu Ithihasam' won the Sahithya Academy Award in 2003. He has also penned a lot of books falling under non-fiction category such as 'Sirpiye Unnai Sedhukkugiren' and all of them have got wide readership. Most of his books have been translated into various other Indian languages and English.
He is still active penning lyrics and has many exciting Tamil films under his kitty.
