A promising premise which would have done better if it had stayed focused would have helped 'Kavi Uddeshichathu' big time. Nevertheless the movie sure has a nice feel to it and delivers pretty well. It is the first half that meanders, the second half has what is expected from a film like this and offers a coherent plot and entertaining comedy. The movie is from the makers of 'Ramaniyechiyude Naamathil' and there are references to it in the movie. For their big screen debut, Thomas and Liju Thomas has not done a bad job.

The entire movie is set in the volleyball crazy village of Allimoola.  The movie opens with the childhood of Jimmy (Asif Ali) and Jasmine (Anju Kurien). At present Jimmy has no particular job to speak of, having failed to pass the police test which he had aspired for due to his short tempered nature. All he does is play volleyball and has an ace volleyball team called Allimoola Gangs. The first half introduces the place and characters including Jasmine's rich brother Vattathil Bosco (Narain) and Jimmy's gang.

This part of the movie tries out all the gimmicks of a conventional entertainer. It is the second half of the movie that impresses, with the plot on track and the narrative becoming more real. There are genuine flashes of humour that would keep the viewer engrossed. The introduction of Minnal Simon (Biju Menon) spices up the proceedings by now. And there is the the bullet riding Gladys (Lena). Jimmy's efforts to woo Jasmine and a betting game of volleyball all make this part interesting.

Asif Ali has really done a neat job and he shines through with a controlled performance. Biju Menon's by now typical style comes through and he gives a riveting performance as the laid back Simon. Anju is okay in patches and Narain's over the top mannerisms looked amateurish or maybe his character needed them. Jimmy's team is flamboyant and they look great on screen. Lena is natural and has done commendably. There are many elements that make this a safe entertainer including the village volleyball life, which has been shot effectively.

Technically the team has done well especially shooting the volleyball sequences and crisp game editing. The songs and BGM are passable. The director duo has made their big screen debut well. 'Kavi Uddeshichath' is an average entertainer and is a fun watch.

Rating: 2.50 / 5.0
