Bellamkonda Srinivas awaits the release of 'Kavacham' on December 7. In this interview, he talks about the film, why it's unique, working with debutant director Srinivas Mamilla, what he is looking forward to do and more.
Why do you prefer to do action movies most of the time?
I have always loved action films since childhood. They have a wide variety of stories. Love stories can be done only in a limited way. But action genre offers many possibilities, so much scope. An actor can show different variations.
I have always chosen distinct scripts. Both 'Jaya Janaki Nayaka' and 'Saakshyam' are different. I always want to be this way. I always try to give my best and come up with good content.
Tell us about the new director, Srinivas Mamilla.
He had been a very good co-director for movies like 'Drushyam' and 'Gopala Gopala'. In 'Kavacham', he has narrated a racy story. The film takes a plunge into the story in 15 minutes. It's not a small thing to have command over so many crafts. He is crystal clear about what he wants. He has his way in the end. He has previously worked with Pawan Kalyan garu and others on dubbing.
What is the story like?
The story pans over 24 hours. I am playing a cop who faces a serious allegation. How he proves his innocence is the crux. The screenplay is full of twists. What each character can do is exciting. How I am trapped is a treat in itself.
What are the roles of the heroines like?
Mehreen's role is a key one. I won't talk much about what Mehreen and Kajal Aggarwal are doing in the film. This is basically a thriller with action scenes. We have defied the requirement for too many action scenes in the film. It's all very tight. There is no deflection in the narration. This film is a cross between intellectual and non-intellectual stuff.
You are looking more confident than ever.
I have received a great response for my look. The mass audience likes cop characters a lot. The name of my character is Vijay in the movie. It's because Amitabh Bachchan garu's name in many films is Vijay. I feel sentimental about it as I have always loved his movies.
Has 'Kavacham' already made enough money?
The project is safe even before its release. I am confident about the project and am waiting for the audience's response.
'JJN' made very good share at the box office and earned very good returns through satellite rights. 'Kavacham' has fetched very good satellite rights.
Was it tough to do two films at a time?
Not really. The plan is to release Teja sir's movie in March. So, we worked hard to complete 'Kavacham' for release in December. I don't know how I could work so hard. I had to go on working for day and night for dubbing and dancing. We could complete it in 70 days. Same goes with Teja sir's movie. Despite this, the quality was not compromised.
Kajal Aggarwal was saying in her interview that you don't use your family name.
She does ask me as to why I work that hard. I always tell my directors to treat me like a new hero. I prefer a healthy working environment.
Did the failure of 'Saakshyam' disappoint you?
'Saakshyam' took us so much time to be made. I couldn't come out of the disappointment of its failure for a few days. Fortunately, I had 'Kavacham' on hand and so, I could focus on work. Otherwise, it would have taken 6 months to be back to normalcy.
Who gives you criticism?
I do take his feedback. He has a lot of experience and it counts a lot. I take feedback from my friends, PR team and others around.
Are you thinking of expanding your base among family audiences?
You can stop nobody's talent now. You dance well and upload your video on social media, it can go viral. Platforms are growing. I am working towards winning the hearts of the family audience. It may take time.
What are your up-and-coming projects?
I have given the nod to three projects. They will be announced on my birthday in January.
