Director Mari Selvaraj who had made his debut in Tamil cinema in 2017 with the movie Pariyerum Perumal starring Kathir and Anandhi and produced by Pa Ranjith is next directing Dhanush's 41st movie Karnan which is produced by Kalaipulu S Thanu's V Creations.

Karnan which also stars Rajisha Vijayan, Lal, Azhagam Perumal, Gouri G Kishan, Natty Natarajan Subramaniam, Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli and Yogi Babu has music by Santhosh Narayanan and the team has been shooting in and around Tirunelveli.

Now Karnan has faced an issue from actor and politician Karunaas, as his political party Tamil Nadu Mukkulathor Pulipadai has demanded a ban on Karnan and arrest of director Mari Selvaraj. The party has issued a press release saying that the movie is against a particular caste and that these movies will affect the peace in the society, The party has also mentioned a scene where Dhanush's character attacks a police station and that it degrades police.
