Director Karthick Naren's Mafia starring Arun Vijay and Prasanna is in trouble after hurting families of murder victims. Released on February 21, the film which was out on Amazon prime OTT platform has also been removed from the site as it has a scene showing a police investigation board with photos of 5 of the 8 killed by Toronto serial killer Bruce McArthur.
With the movie projecting the people killed by the murderer as people associated with a drug kingpin, the surviving family members of the victims are angry after watching it on OTT platform. The photos used in the movie are those of Skandaraj Navaratnam, Selim Esen, Abdulbasir Faizi, Kirushna Kanagaratnam and Soroush Mahmudi published in Toronto media.
McArthur had in January 2019 pleaded guilty of murdering eight men (including the 5 shown in Mafia chapter 1) between 2010 and 2017. Haran Vijayanathan, executive director at the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention, on behalf of the families of victims said that the families are furious with the false portrayal in the movie, and reportedly Lyca Productions has tendered an unconditional apology to the families. Amazon Prime Video also removed the film from their listing for misusing photos of the victims of Toronto serial homicides.
