With the BJP taking leads in 12 out of 15 Assembly by-poll seats in Karnataka, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and his son BY Vijayendra celebrated the spectacular performance of the saffron party that has left the Congress and the JDS red-faced. With this, the BJP government in the State has become a majority-government.
Reacting to the verdict, Amit Malviya of the BJP said, "Massive lead for the BJP in Karnataka by-polls. Only revalidates the overwhelming mandate people of Karnataka had initially given to the BJP (single largest party) during the assembly elections. Clear message to Congress, JDS, Shiv Sena and NCP: don’t subvert people’s mandate."
Importantly, JDS has failed to perform even half-decently. Says political commentator Dr. Praveen Patil, "Just a few months ago, Kumaraswamy was the CM of Karnataka, now his own party is struggling to save deposits in its own erstwhile strongholds. This is the political cost of forming opportunistic alliances just to keep BJP out of power."
