The newly-formed BJP government in Karnataka has taken a decision to cancel the Tipu Sultan Jayanti that has been celebrated since 2015. As per a note issued by the government, Tipu was a tyrant who massacred Hindus and Christians.
The state festival has led to much outcry and politicization over the years. As per the saffron party, the Congress-led government celebrated the Jayanti to celebrate a "bigoted ruler". On the other hand, the Siddaramaiah government first and the HD Kumaraswamy government later claimed to be only celebrating Tipu's achievements and feats.
A former Congress Minister has said that cancelling the Jayanti is a hurried decision. He said that he will observe the Jayanti even though the government has cancelled it. It has to be seen if the Congress party will continue to observe it at a party level.
