Karan Johar vs. Shaadi ke Director Karan aur Johar: Court Battle Ensues
- IndiaGlitz, [Thursday,June 13 2024]
Karan Johar, a Bollywood director and producer, has petitioned the Bombay High Court to have his name removed from the title of the Hindi film Shaadi ke Director Karan aur Johar.
Before the bench of Justice R.I. Chagla, Johar urgently asked for a stay on the film's June 14, 2024, release. The case would be heard by the bench on Thursday.
An order of restraining and permanent injunction prohibiting the filmmakers from using Johar's name in the title is demanded in the petition. Stressing that he is unrelated to the movie or its makers, Johar charged them with utilizing his name without permission. He said that the title's use of his name infringes upon his privacy and publicity rights among other personal rights. Johar said the filmmakers are taking advantage of his goodwill and reputation by using his 'brand name' without permission.
The lawsuit also mentioned how widely shared in public and on social media are the movie's trailer and posters. Johar said his name and goodwill are suffering irrevocable harm from these promotional materials.
The irreversible loss and damage these posters and trailers are doing to Johar's reputation and goodwill is ongoing. The goodwill and reputation he has built through substantial investments of time, effort, and money will be seriously damaged by the release of the film with a title that contains his brand name, 'Karan Johar,' in whole or in part, the complaint said.
