A woman from Kanyakumari passed away after she consumed poisoned upma Wednesday morning. The food was allegedly poisoned by her husband.
The victim, identified as Divya Sylvester, had been married to Bellarmine for 5 months before her tragic passing. The wedding was reportedly arranged by the parents of the couple, although Bellarmine was in love with another woman at the time. He had asked Divya to grant him a divorce, threatening to kill her if she failed to. However, Divya, who took into consideration the amount of money her parents had spent on her wedding, refused to oblige.
Following this, Bellarmine had bought his wife upma on Wednesday morning. Divya, who usually feeds her dog with her breakfast, let her pet ingest some of the upma. After consuming the upma herself, Divya was shocked to find her dog dead on their lawn. Soon after she realized that she had consumed poisoned food, she sought help from her in-laws, who along with Bellarmine, remained ignorant of the situation. Divya later called the ambulance herself and was shifted to the hospital. She confessed the whole event to the doctors while she briefly regained consciousness before she took her last breath.
Bellarmine, the main accused in the case, and his parents have been arrested and held in judicial custody. The victim’s parents have registered a formal complaint.
