Having already made most of the Tamil population gets fits of laughter; Santhanam is all set to bring the world his first production with Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaya. He has rounded up a unique group of actors for his comedy entertainer and is pinning his hopes on the film to make it big. KLTA comes under our magnifying glass this Pongal threatening to take a bite out of other releases.

What was the success formula behind films like SMS, Boss Engira Bhaskaran and OKOK? They had no real story behind them and were all about fun, just fun. Santhanam decides to take up the success formula after featuring in all of the films himself. Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya is the remake of Indru Poi Naalai Vaa, let's be clear. But it packs so much modern day fun that you wouldn't mind seeing it again despite knowing the story. The point of the film is to make you laugh. It doesn't try to do anything else. It doesn't need to. Director Manikandan needs to be appreciated for keeping things simple and not trying to fit in other things to the film.

As you might expect, Santhanam is right in the middle of things in KLTA. His style of comedy is usual, but a closer look sees that he is evolving with his jokes surrounding himself with several characters to liven things up. Him being one of the lead characters means good news, as we get to see more of his mockery. Even some of the more dark sequences have humor and his character in the film reflects his zeal to bring laughter into everything.

Power Star Dr.Srinivasan is one of the reasons this film stands out from the rest of the pack. In fact, his character is actually called "Power" throughout the film. Interestingly, he gets to showcase some of the very traits of his real life personality. Seeing his face and actions lightens things up quickly and effortlessly. The impact is seen everywhere, with the comedy, the songs and even some serious scenes. And when he utters a punch dialogue, that would have been cheesy otherwise, you want to rejoice and cheer.

Sethu and Vishaka Singh play the other two important characters in the film. They are given the responsibility of bringing in a small story to the film, while also contributing as aids to Santhanam and Power Star as they sing and dance around them. They come in to focus especially on the songs when they look normal, when everything about the other two is just different.

The highlight of the film would be the supporting actors who play pawns to the growing comedy beast. Played by popular and prominent names like VTV Ganesh, Kovai Sarala etc, If you take notice, they are a good reason behind the comedy and are pivotal to the success of Santhanam in particular and also to Dr.Srinivasan to a certain extent. There are even appearances by guest appearance by Simbhu and Gautham Menon as themselves.

On the technical side of things, the film doesn't offer too much to notice. Balasubramaniam's camera does well to paint the commercial film on screen, and Thaman's BGM also help out in making the laughter more prominent. The editing however, controls the pace of the film and several imaginary sequences and cut-scenes in-between scenes have been worked into the screenplay well. And as long as you don't go searching for mistakes, you wouldn't mind the minor hiccups here and there.

Amidst all the comedy and fun, there are few elements to the movie, which can become annoying. The songs in particular take you nowhere, and without the funny Power Star to make things interesting, you can't take anything back home. The comedy does get a bit dry every now and then, and the rhyming sentences suddenly become prominent. Despite it's minimalistic ideals, KLTA does make room for some unnecessary aspects for the sake of bringing some focus on the story, and it can be quite clearly seen that it doesn't fit the puzzle.

Overall though, the film is enjoyable. The high point is the comedy and fortunately it's there everywhere. The crew's biggest strength would be their ability to make people laugh and it's exercised well for the most part. It feeds on commercialism, but you can choose to ignore that side of things and have a laugh with friends. Just make sure you don't set your hopes too high. You might get bored of the similar style of comedy iterating through the film.

Rating - 3.5/5 - comedy that doesn't get interrupted by a plot

Verdict - if laughter is all you want, you are going to have fun
