DMK’s high-profile Rajya Sabha M.P. and party president Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi turned 50 yesterday and celebrate the day in a grand manner as it was her first birthday in recent years where she wouldn’t have felt the pressure of ‘sword hanging over her head’ relating to the 2-G scam whose verdict, delivered a few weeks back, absolved her from the multi-crore scam.

Kanimozhi, who usually cuts her birthday cake at her CIT Colony residence, has been able to do so for the past 2-3 years as Karunanidhi remains confined largely to his Gopalapuram residence due to his ill-health. Her golden jubilee birthday celebrations were held in a grand manner with drummers beating the drums, cadres bursting crackers and distributing sweets among themselves and to the people.

City’s walls had been inundated with posters wishing Kanimozhi a happy birthday as the still young-looking politician enters her fifties. She visited half-brother Stalin’s Alwarpet residence where the latter wished her long life by draping a silk shawl around her shoulders and gifted a beautiful silk saree to her. Later, Kanimozhi drove to Gopalapuram and sought blessings from her father Karunanidhi.

Unlike last year when Kanimozhi had asked cadres not to celebrate her birthday in view of farmers’ suicide, this year’s birthday was grand in nature as it was a twin celebration for Kanimozhi: she is now free from the ‘2G’ case and is also entering her fifties!
