Kangana Ranaut is all set to unleash her forthcoming political thriller ‘Emergency’ on the big screens. She also directed the movie, which stars her as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the stormy Emergency years 1975– 1977. Speaking in a recent interview with Variety, Kangana said Indira Gandhi's life was a "Shakespearean tragedy," reflecting her intense curiosity in this historical period.
"I feel as if I'm riding this ferocious, cruel beast, which I started to love riding initially, but now I don't think I can get off of it," Kangana said, referencing a passage from the book of cultural activist Pupul Jayakar on Indira Gandhi where Gandhi muses over her great power.
Kangana underlined that ‘Emergency’ delves deeply into the essence of power and its effects, not only recounts occurrences. Her life seemed to be a Shakespearean tragedy, she said. Not for us to criticize or assess. It is as it is. The movie presents an honest view of the events leading up and following the Emergency.

"Witness the darkest times of democratic Indian history & the lust for power that almost burned down the nation!" she captioned. # Emergency Trailer scheduled for August 14th. On September 6th, cinemas all around present the dramatic narrative of the worst episode of Indian democracy.
