Soolamangalam Jayalakshmi, the elder among the popular Carnatic and devotional pair of singers fondly addressed as Soolamangalam Sisters has passed away today a few hours ago. She was 85 when she breathed her last due to age related ailments.
Jalakashmi and her younger sister Rajalakshmi hail from Soolamanagalam of Tanjore district in Tamil Nadu. They have rendered many carnatic songs, devotional and national songs in Tamil. They are extremely popular for their heart melting rendition of devotional songs. The 'Kandha Sashti Kavacham' and 'Kandha Guru Kavacham' in their voice is eternally etched in the minds of each and every devotee of Lord Muruga.
The sisters have also sung many songs in Tamil film. While Rajalakshmi who passed away in 1992 had an long career as a film playback singer, Jayalakshmi has sung very less number of songs in films.
The duo have won many awards and honours Muruga Ganamritha, Kuyil Isai Thilakam, Isaiarasi and Nadhakanal and the Tamilnadu Government's prestigious Kalaimamani Award in the year 1992.
Jayalakshmi's mortal remains are kept at her residence in Besant Nagar, Chennai for public to pay their homage. Later it will be donated to the Medical college students for their research on human anatomy as per the deceased singer's last wish.
