The latest Sureh Gopi - Mukesh movie `Kancheepurathe Kalayaanam' fails to find any energy or perhaps a bit of tempo. The movie is tedious watch at times, giving the feelings of an extended television comedy, stretched to a feature length. And the primary culprit as usual is the artificial script, that fails to liven up to anything engaging.

Even in the times of films like `Passenger' and `Currency', it seems discouraging from the part of first timer like directors Fazil and Jayakrishan that they have resorted to such recycled storylines similar to movies like Pandipada, Malayalee Mamanu Vanakkam, and Thenkasipattanam, to create their debut movie. An intended full throat masala film which may have been a hit in the 1990's, the movie is too outdated in today's times.

The movie set in the town of Kancheepuram, has Achuthan Kutty and Najeeb (Suresh Gopi and Mukesh respectively) as protagonists. These, one time thick friends turned bitter foes as Najeeb eloped with Achuthan Kutty's sister Aathira and started another event management company, new friends, to beat that of the formers which is named as Friends Event Management Company. To add the mandatory comic track, both has one manager with the same name Premachandran, played by Harishree Ashokan and Jagadheesh, who are engaged in more war of words than in their works. Achuthan Kutty after the deceit from his closest friend and sister has decided to stay alone, all his life. And Najeeb and Athira are all set to get him married, by any means.

Into these course of events arrives a big marriage function of Meenakshi from Kancheepuram, which Achuthan Kutty and Najeed agrees to do combined. Meenakshi is getting married to Saravanan, who happens to be her cousin and son of Varadaraja Mudaliar (Jagathy). Najeeb and Achuthan Kutty who arrives at Kancheepuram to add splendour to the marriage function, accidentally becomes the centre players of the entire proceedings.

The problem with the movie is that the movie buffs are very much used to cross- border stories featuring Tamil villages, "Naattaamai" and the like. In early movies like `Chithram' it was definitely refreshing and interesting, but as another dozen of the prototype arrived in the last two decades, the viewers fail to associate any freshness to the plot points. Added to this is the awful screenwriting with overused cliched non- sense comedies, which hardly tickle the funny bone. Check out the ridiculous background tracks and effects that accompany every 'funny moment' in the movie. Fazil and Jayakrishnan who even sticks to more wider shots than usual, also shows signs that they needs to go a very long distance before becoming independent movie makers.

In the acting side, every actor in the movie is playing their regular roles for the umpteenth time, without any degree of freshness. Muktha and the song sequence featuring her are mentionable than every others in the offer. Suresh Gopi appear jaded and also is not up to mark while Mukesh doesn't have enough screen space to create interest in the character. The only actors to watch out in this movie are debutante Pooja and Nandha Kishore, who are sure to be in the acting business for long.

M Jayachandran's song ''Athiramarathin' is hummable but the BG scores are really horrible. The technical sides of the movie are pretty avereage, except the interesting art direction by Renjith Kothari.

All together `Kancheepuarathe Kalyaanam' is not an imaginative, impressive affair to a regular filmgoer. If you are on to this, just expect a pedestrian stuff.
