Ace director Kamal is of the opinion that 'Premam' is a bad influence for students. He has pointed out two aspects of the movie that he finds particularly problematic. One is George and Malar being in a relationship, when they are student and teacher respectively. The other is drinking in class.

Howvere, the comments have courted controversy with many asking if Kamal has not done a similar movie. In his 'Mazhaettum Munpe', we have a female student Annie falling in love with her sir, played by Mammootty. Also, teachers are welcomed to class in the midst of a volley of crackers.
