The Supreme Court today stayed the Madras High Court order for the closure of the Tamil Nadu state-owned TASMAC wine shops and has also stayed the requirement of liquor buyers to possess a copy of the Aadhar card. The liquor stores that had been closed for two months following the COVID 19 pandemic was opened on May 11th in the entire state excepting Chennai. The High Court then ordered the immediate closure hearing several PILs and suggested to sell online or deliver the stuff to the home directly.
Kamal Haasan whose Makkal Neethi Maiam party also approached the court to stop the functioning of TASMAC also filed a caveat in the Supreme Court but the stay has come against him.
Kamal has now taken to Twitter and has written in Tamil "The Tamil Nadu government first used delaying tactics in the High Court and has now secured a stay in the Supreme Court. The government that never showed any speed in serving the people has swiftly acted to reopen liquor stores. It is time for the people to turn into the center of justice and teach the government a lesson."
