Kamal Haasan strongly supports Vetrimaaran's controversial statement

Celebrated filmmaker Vetrimaaran in his most recent speech at VCK leader Thirumavalavan's birthday event has sparked a raging controversy. He had opined that there is an attempt to destroy Tamil culture and an example of that is saying that the great Tamil emperor Raja Raja Cholan was a Hindu.

Tamil scholars are united in the opinion that the ancient people of Thamilakam belonged to Vainavam and Saivam religions. On Wednesday Kamal Haasan watched 'Ponniyin Selvan' along with Chiyaan Vikram and Karthi and addressed the press.

A journo asked Kamal's opinion about Vetrimaaran's statement and the legendary actor strongly asserted that the word Hindu did not exist during Raja Raja Cholan era and people followed Samanam apart from Vainavam and Saivam. He also said that he too like Vetrimaaran believes that people were united as Tamils even though they followed various religions.

Earlier this year Vetrimaaran in an interview had stated that he has held talks with Kamal for a new movie. He also added that he had no idea when the project will take off considering both his and the celebrated actor's current commitments. Vetrimaaran is currently filming 'Viduthalai' starring Vijay Sethupathi and Soori which will release in two parts. Kamal on the other hand is currently starring in 'Indian 2' directed by Shankar and is also hosting 'Bigg Boss 6'.
