Kamal Haasan courted huge controversy all over India for his remarks that Nathuram Godse was free India's first terrorist and that he was a Hindu as well. The Aravankurichi police station had filed an FIR under two sections 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 295A ( Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.)
Kamal Haasan had applied for anticipatory bail and the case came up for hearing at the Madurai branch of the Madras High Court where he had stated that he did not hurt the sentiments of the Hindus and had no such intentions but only mentioned the historical fact about Nathuram Godse. The Makkal Neethi Maiam leader also pointed out that Godse himself in his book "Why I Killed Gandhi" had mentioned that he did so because the Mahatma by supporting the partition of India had hurt the sentiments of the Hindus.
Justice B Pugazhendhi granted Kamal Haasan anticipatory bail on the grounds that he was a leader of a registered political party and the court also listened to the entire speech delivered at Aruvankurichi.
