Kalyani Malik is the music director of 'Lakshmi's NTR'. The film's background music has been critically acclaimed. In this interview, catch him talk about teaming up with Ram Gopal Varma, how he feels when he compares himself with his brother MM Keeravani and more.
Fifteen years of wait is over
My career can be divided into before RGV and after RGV. I have waited for a blockbuster like this for 15 years. Everyone is praising the BGM. I am very happy.
Never knew I could do this
I didn't know that I could do songs and BGM of this sort until RGV signed me up. It's his faith in me that drove me towards achieving what I never did. There are 11 songs in the movie and none of them is like others.
I got an opportunity to work on the project through Sira Sri. I hadn't known much about him before this project. RGV was looking at songs like those in 'Shankarabharanam' and 'Megha Sandesam'. He motivated me to give my best and push myself.
Sorry for the ban in AP
I feel very bad that the movie hasn't released in Andhra Pradesh. The people of that State have missed this good product. The producer too must have lost monies because of the ban till April 15. We have not received any legal notices for working on this film.
BGM was a scary challenge
Composing the BGM was really a scary challenge. The songs were largely less difficult to compose, with the exception of two. RGV okays the tunes quite fast. He doesn't delay things.
I feel inferior
I never wanted to become a music director. But I ended up becoming up. Whenever I compare myself with Keeravani garu, I feel inferior. I am nothing compared with him. Since we are brothers and we are in the same field (music), it does affect equations between us when we listen to the comments of people. Although we share a cordial relationship, even jealousy is bound to be there when comparisons are drawn between us. Incidentally, we both have happened to compose the music for biopics of the same person simultaneously.
Name change
I have changed my name for a personal reason. It's not because of numerology or astrology.
I never lobby for offers
If something is in your destiny, it will come to you whether or not you have a PR strategy. I have never lobbied for anything. I like to spend my time with my family. Subconsciously, my life has been the way I have always wanted. I like to do it slowly and steadily. When my song for a small hero becomes a hit, I feel very happy.
A fan of TDP
I am a big fan of TDP. Since my days in Kovvur, I was a huge fan of NTR garu. I never imagined that I would do a film like 'Lakshmi's NTR'.
