The Marina beach is paradise for health concious people in the early mornings, love haven for young couples and pure joy for children and family who take an outing there. However the world's longest artificial beach is also sheer bad luck for the Dravidian parties for the past five decades or so.
In 1969 the popular Chief Minister and founder of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) passed away and was buried at the Marina and Karunanidhi took over the riegns from him. Within few months a rift between Karunanidhi and MGR resulted in a split of the party and the ADMK was born under the latter's leadership. Similarly MGR passed away on December 24th 1987 and had a Marina burial. Instantly the ADMK split into two as Jayalalitha faction and V.N. Janaki (MGR's wife) faction though Jaya took full control later.
Three decades later Jayalalitha passed away on December 5th 2016 and most readers would be aware of the huge drama that occured on her grave at the Marina. First the the ADMK i split nto two (Sasikala vs OPS) and now it is a three way tug between TTV Dinakaran, OPS-EPS and other members of the Sasikala family.
Cut to present day and Kalaigniar Karunanidhi after heavy drama found his resting place beside his mentor Anna Durai at the Marina. Inside seven days M.K. Azhagiri the eldest son has thrown a bombshell that the loyal DMK cadres are all on his side posing a direct challenge at his siblings Stalin and Kanizmozhi.
Hence we can safely conclude that the Marina that beautiful hangout for the common man is downright bad luck for the Dravidian parties. Also Read : DMK family War begins
