Kaiyoppu
After Prajapathi - the big budget movie that did not do well in the box office, Renjith is trying his hands on something that seems very different; again with Mammootty in the lead. Kaiyoppu, his new venture is a low budget film that Ranjith completed in a matter of 15 days. Mammootty plays the lead role of Balachandran which incidentally is his 300th film. The film which was shot in and around Calicut tells the story of the emotional and creative conflicts that a writer faces when he is under deadline pressure to deliver a thing of substance.
Balachandran, an orphan, hailing from Nileswaram is a person who attracts everyone with his pleasant manners and sincere talkativeness. Even though living an ordinary life as an accountant in a fertilizer store, he has an all consuming interest in literature. Books which are his only friends have a great influence on him which forces him to scribble something occasionally. Still unmarried, he has been living alone for years in a run-down lodge in Calicut where his room is littered with books.
With each passing day of loneness in the lodge he starts writing seriously, but never considers him a writer who finds it mandatory to write at least a few pages a day. He writes only when he is that much inspired, only when he feels an inner compulsion to write. His occasional outings with literature, slowly take the shape of a novel. And in the course of time, some of his writings get published.
Once at a public meeting Vasudevan, an eminent literary critic, speaks in glowing terms about Balachandran's unfinished novel and applauded him on his effort of finesse. Balachandran who was overjoyed with the recognition realizes he has what it takes to be an accomplished novelist In the mean time, Sivadaasan the owner of Kilipattu books and publishers, who happened to hear the words of Vaasudevan, finds it a better chance for him to publish this novel and thereby clearoff his debts that incurred with his earlier publications. With that intention he began following Balachandran with the offering to publish his work. He forces the writer to complete the novel at the earliest.
At the same time Balachandran also regain one of his long lost friend Padma who was with him in his college days. She is back from Bombay to spend some time with his old friends also to forget her personal family strains. Balachandran, who is a man with a good soul also need some money for the time being to help the daughter of one of his close neighbors, who needs an operation for life. All is set for the protagonist to complete his work on novel as it will help him to manage some money for the operation, spare some time for his friend and help the publisher from his debts. But suddenly Balachandran becomes a victim of what haunts most writers. He is caught in the stifling grip of what is called a writer's block where the mind becomes as blank as the paper before him. Director Renjith takes you through the emotional conflicts that a writer faced with such a situation undergoes.
The film which is aimed at a serious festival circuit, has a few players with Khushboo playing Padma and Mukesh playing Sivadaasan. The other casts includes Nedumudi Venu, Nilamboor Ayesha, Mamukoya, Jafer Idukki, Jayaraj and Neena Kurup. The film scripted by the director himself is supported behind the frames, in the camera by Manoj Pillai, editing by Beena Paul, art direction by Saabu Raam and is also produced by the director himself. The film is surely destined to earn laurels from the serious film buffs.
