In what might be construed as a disconcerting news for film professionals, Minister Kadambur Raju has refuted to withdraw entertainment tax over films in the state.
In the 64th general body meeting of Nadigar Sangam held yesterday, Vishal had opposed the state's decision to levy a 10% percent tax on top of GST. Vishal who is the General Secreatry of the Nadigar Sangam also told that the members would meet the state’s CM Edappadi K Palaniswami for a favorable resolution.
But the actor's pleas went ignored as the information minister quoted today that there are no plans to reduce or rollback the entertainment tax as of now. "Since the ticket prices have been reduced, the film industry won't be affected by this move," he told.
This has come as a shocker to industry professionals with the impending release of movies including Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Mersal’ on the line. Already, this weekend saw no new releases as the release of new movies has been stopped awaiting the government to address the issue and come towards a favorable decision.
