'Kabali' and 'Kaala' director Pa. Ranjith recently made a few controversial statements on the ancient Chola king Raja Raja Chola. He said that Dalits were oppressed during his regime and that there was land-grabbing involved to build temples. His factually incorrect remarks resulted in the Thiruppananthal police filing a case and issuing an arrest warrant.
The outspoken filmmaker then approached the Madurai Branch of the Madras High Court for anticipatory bail but the police had also filed a petition objecting it. When the case came up a few days back, it was found that the police petition had mistakes and time was given until Friday to correct the mistakes. The court also ordered that the 'Kaala' director should not be arrested in the meantime.
The case came up for hearing at the Madurai High Court and the judge, after going through both the petitions, refused to extend the stay on Pa. Ranjith's arrest.
It is now feared by the Ranjith camp that he could be arrested any time now.
