'Kaala' is no 'Kabali'. Despite fairly encouraging reviews and FDFS reports, the Rajinikanth-starrer has put up a lukewarm performance on Thursday (its first day) in the Telugu States.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana combined gave it a gross of around Rs. 6.50 crores only. The film's theatrical rights are valued at more than Rs. 30 crores.
In Karnataka, 'Kabali' had done Rs. 10 crores on Day 1. 'Kaala', on the other hand, could be screened in just 12 screens because of the anti-Rajini sentiment among pro-Kannada outfits. It was supposed to be released in as many as 160 screens.
The non-Tamil market, on the whole, is a big bad news for 'Kaala'. In North India, it saw only around 35 percent opening, says senior film observer Sreedhar Pillai.
In Tamil Nadu, the Pa.Ranjith directorial grossed only Rs. 15 crores. 'Kabali' had made Rs. 21.50 crores.
