Today marks the 89th birthday of K. Balachander and we take great pride in remembering the legend who has contributed immensely not only to Tamil but Indian cinema as well. In the 196s when KB entered the film industry from the stage he revolutionized the portrayal of women writing bold and progressive characters for them which are a reference point even to this day.

As a filmmaker, Balachander did not rely on dialogues but used the camera and editing to good effect to convey intricate emotions. His uniqueness was in handling complex relationships especially that of man-woman which put him on a league of his own. Much has been written about his eye for talent having discovered giants such as Nagesh, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Nassar, Sujatha and Saritha among others. But above that what remains an undeniable fact is that KB wiill always remain the encyclopedia for all young filmmakers when it comes to making relevant films that stand the test of time.
