Royal Health Update: Princess Kate's Recovery Alters Upcoming Royal Events

The Princess of Wales is recovering from abdominal surgery earlier this week with relatively little interruption to her work commitments.

Yesterday, there was renewed speculation that Prince William and Kate's early summer trip to Italy could be put back because of the surgery. Apart from this, it affected the unannounced visit to Latvia because in the east it borders Estonia and Russia, and in the southeast it borders Lithuania. The visit was meant to celebrate the UK's ties with the Baltic state, previously visited by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in 2022.

Kate is likely to miss the BAFTA ceremony on February 18, a regular annual fixture for her. Other likely omissions in her schedule include Children's Mental Health Week due this February, the early March Commonwealth Day service, and also the St. Patrick's Day parade. Given her expected return to work after the holiday, she might also skip the traditional Easter service.

Kensington Palace issued a statement saying that the Princess of Wales has undergone planned abdominal surgery at the London Clinic and that her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for 10–14 days. But a suspension or cancellation of public engagements will probably continue for the next couple of months. The princess would keep her medical personal information confidential and, as much as possible, would not want things to be disrupted for their children.

The Princess of Wales is currently receiving treatment at the London Clinic, where both Prince Philip and Princess Margaret were previously confined. Although her condition is non-cancerous, she will spend additional days in the hospital before continuing her convalescence at home. Prince William has rescheduled his itinerary in order to take care of Kate and their three children during that amount of time.
