Justice Karnan (retired) is to be released from a Kolkata Prison today (Wednesday) after serving the 6-month long imprisonment imposed on him by the Supreme Court.
Kanan, who had served as a Judge at the Madras High Court and the Calcutta High Court, was arrested on 20th June this year from a hide-out. Earlier, he had leveled corruption charges against many Judges including the then Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. After it snowballed into a huge issue, he was transferred and posted to work as a Judge at the Calcutta High Court.
The Supreme Court filed a case of defamation against Justice Karnan after which he went into hiding to evade arrest. In fact, he retired in ‘absentia’ as he was under hiding on the day of his superannuation. After he was arrested from his hiding place, Justice Karnan was imprisoned for six months by the Supreme Court.
His prison term commenced on 20th June at the Presidency Prison in Kolkata; despite repeated requests by him, he wasn’t released from the prison on bail. After he fell ill for a few days, he remained hospitalized with police protection. In the meantime, he is being released from the prison today as he had completed his sentence of six months.
