Indian U-19 Team won the ODI cricket world cup at the picturesque stadium at Mount Maunganui in New Zealand by defeating Australia by 8 wickets in today’s final.
India thus became the only side to have lifted the coveted trophy for the fourth time as Prithvi Shaw and his boys made merry and literally toyed with the Australian bowling attack in reaching the target with more than 11 overs to spare. ‘Man of the Series’ Shubman Gill scored a breezy 31 while opener and captain Shaw hit 29. Fellow opener Manjot Kalra scored a match winning ton as ‘keeper Desai remained not out and hit the winning four to spark the celebrations.
Led by batting prodigy Prithvi Shah, the Indian clean thus kept its slate clean at the tournament, remaining undefeated in six matches. Two of those wins, including the finals, came against Australia. It may be recalled that India opened their Cup matches by a thumping 100-run win over Australia and fitting enough, handed out another humiliating defeat to Aussies in the final (match) of the tournament.
Aussies won the toss and opted to bat and despite a decent start, the batsmen were found wanting against some incisive spell of fast bowling by Indian pacers Porrel, Mavi and Nagarkoti restricted them to 216, a below-par total on a perfect batting track. Delhi’s left-handed opener Kalra won the ‘man of the match’ award for his unbeaten century.
