WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was released from Belmarsh jail in the UK on Monday after pleading guilty to one count of conspiring to divulge sensitive US national defense materials. This settlement terminated his five-year UK sentence and allowed him to return to Australia.

Assange, 52, battled extradition to the US on charges of publishing secret military material. He is scheduled to appear in a US court on Wednesday after the UK government granted his extradition in June 2022.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was commended by Assange's father, John Shipton, for his role in the issue and predicted his return to Australia. In a pre-recorded video outside the prison, Stella, Assange's wife, verified his release and thanked supporters.

Assange spent seven years in Ecuador's London embassy to escape extradition to Sweden on sexual assault charges that were ultimately dismissed.
