After Ecuador withdrew his asylum status, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested by British police on Thursday and removed from the embassy, where he had been claiming asylum since 2012.
“Julian Assange, 47, has today, Thursday, April 11, been arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) at the Embassy of Ecuador,” the police said. Assange is now in custody at a “central London police station where he will remain, before being presented before Westminister Magistrates’ Court as soon as is possible,” it has been reported.
Assange first sought asylum in Ecuador’s embassy in London in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over allegations of sexual assault. Even though the probe was dropped last year, Assange remained in the embassy fearing that he could face extradition to the United States for leaking classified military and diplomatic documents through Wikileaks, with the help of former military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.
Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno, who accused Assange of violating the agreement and leaking his private messages and photos recently, was thanked by British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt for ensuring his justice. “Mr. Assange has violated the agreement we reached with him and his legal counsel too many times,” Moreno stated earlier this month.
Right before Assange’s arrest, Lenin Moreno declared in a video statement, “Today, I announce that the discourteous and aggressive behavior of Mr. Julian Assange, the hostile and threatening declarations of its allied organization, against Ecuador, and especially the transgression of international treaties, have led the situation to a point where the asylum of Mr. Assange is unsustainable and no longer viable.”
However, Moreno also got a guarantee from Britain that Assange would not be extradited to a country where he could face torture or the death penalty.
