Justice Malarmathi of Economic Offences Court, Egmore, Chennai took strong exception to jailbird Dinakaran’s attempt to pose questions to her, telling him in strict and plain terms that it was not he who was supposed to pose questions but he was only supposed to reply to questions posed to him.

The Judge also directed the investigating agencies to wrap up investigation in the FERA violation case against Dinkaran within three months. Jailbird Dinakaran has been accused of illegally investing US Dollars worth Rs.1.4 crore and England pound sterling worth Rs.44 lakhs in London’s Barclay Bank in the name of a firm named ‘Tipper Investments’.

Enforcement Directorate filed cases against him in 1996 and has been interrogating the case. When the case came up for hearing at the Economic Offences Court in Egmore, he asked the ED to give him questions in advance so that he can prepare a reply to them. Justice Malarmathi objected to Dinakaran’s undue demand stating it wasn’t a Civil Court but a Criminal Court.

“Making such a demand is a condemnable offence.  I’m aware of my duties and I don’t need to be told by you as to what to do and what not to do. You are not supposed to pose questions to me but you are only supposed to give answers to all questions posed to you,” the Judge said while postponing the case before directing that the investigation in the case should be wrapped up within the next three months.
